Nocturnal 200 Essential Artists Info

Andain - Beautiful Things (original mix) [Black Hole]
Andain is Josh Gabriel, Mavie Marcos and David Penner. Their blend of soulful, dub-inspired music combines live instruments, stunning vocal performances and emotional electronics.  Mavie Marcos is a composer and lyricist who has been singing most of her life. She is a classically trained vocalist and has performed such challenging pieces as the "Queen of the Night" aria from Mozart's Magic Flute. Mavie has a varied musical theatre background and has had rolls in plays such as "Pirates of Penzance," "West Side Story," and "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas."  David Penner has been collaborating with musicians for 15 years. He plays acoustic and electric guitar, bass, sitar, piano, and saxophone. David has been in several bands including "Nine Headed Cactus Demon" (lead guitar, lead vocals), "Gage" (lead guitar) and "Kickbacks" (bass). Three geniuses at work bringing us some of the greatest vocal Nocturnal has to offer.

Above & Beyond - No One On Earth (Gabriel & Dresden remix) [Anjunabeats]
There are DJs who can rock a party, a club, a festival. And there are acts that can write songs that will
bring out the goose bumps in you. But there’s only one group that can do both: Above & Beyond. Above & Beyond make music, pure and simple. That music happens to be electronic. And it connects. “We’re a group,” says Above & Beyond founder Tony McGuinness. “And what we’re trying to do is exactly do that, connect with people. You try and describe something in your own life, but in a way that will  resonate with other people. When you see people singing along as passionately as they do, I guess you’re getting it right.” This makes Above & Beyond unique, not just in trance, but in popular music as well. “We like to think of ourselves as songwriters first,” says Paavo Siljamaki, who with Jono Grant makes up the trio. “That’s our approach to music. The most challenging thing is to write a song that really touches the listener.”

Depeche Mode - A Pain That I'm Used To (Jacques Lu Cont remix) [Mute]
Never heard of Jacques Lu Cont? How about Stuart Price? He’s a producer whose remixing and production skills are coveted by artists including Madonna, Missy Elliott, The Killers, Gwen Stefani, Seal and most recently Keane. His acts include British electronic pop/rock band Zoot Woman (with Adam and Jonny Blake), Les Rythmes Digitales, Paper Faces, Man With Guitar, Thin White Duke, and the parodic French moniker Jacques Lu Cont. Price's use of the names Jacques Lu Cont and Les Rythmes Digitales was initially a reference to the then current vogue for French house in the United Kingdom; Price even went as far as to conduct interviews with British journalists in French via an interpreter. In interviews from around this time, he also claimed that he had grown up listening exclusively to classical music, until one day encountering the album Dare by the Human League. Certainly, Price was heavily influenced by music from the 1980s, and all his records and side projects bear a heavy debt to the 80s sounds of synthpop bands.

InFusion - Legacy (Junkie XL remix) [Audio Therapy]
Ever wonder what the XL in Junkie XL stands for? The XL stands for Xpanding Limits and that’s exactly what this dutch DJ has been doing. JXL is known as a talented remixer, drawing critical acclaim with remixes of tracks by Britney Spears, Bloc Party,Michael Bublé, Coldplay, Avril Lavigne. Sarah McLachlan, Rammstein, Scissor Sisters, Justin Timberlake, and the aforementioned Fear Factory. With an unrivaled work ethic, which routinely includes fourteen-hour days in his studio, Holkenborg keeps extremely busy creating the music for video games and films.

Dirty Vegas - Days Go By [Credence]
Following in the footsteps of crossover groups like Underworld, the South London trio Dirty Vegas took electronica up the pop charts with their hit single "Days Go By." The group formed in 2001 when DJs Ben Harris and Paul Harris (unrelated) joined forces with their old friend, singer Steve Smith. Smith had just returned from Ibiza, a clubber-friendly island that inspired him to write an early version of "Days Go By." They took a break in 2005 with each member working on separate projects, including Smith's solo album This Town, which appeared in 2008. In 2009 they were back to their original sound with the single "Changes," plus a remix of Ladytron’s track "Tomorrow."  ~ David Jeffries, All Music Guide

Thom Yorke - Harrowdown Hill (PQM remix)
While he’s known for his progressive tribal house sounds, his roots are in hip-hop. He earned the name “Quick Mix” as a teenager when first wowing audiences with his “turntablist” skills. Not straying far from his background as a block party DJ growing up in Queens NY, he readily demonstrates those turntable skills with seamless mixing, creative layering and the clever use of acappellas, which often happen “live” and in the moment. His hip-hop sets to be filled with Old Skool “East Coast” anthems, and his house sets are unique, emotional and undeniable on the dance floor.

Djuma Soundsystem - Les Djinns (Trentemoller remix) [Get Physical Music]
A couple of years ago, in the midst of all the etnic inspired cliche' Ibiza compilations and all the afro-house, we sat down with our friend Frantz Thomasen a.k.a. DJ Disse and asked ourselves this question:
is it not possible to make something etnic, but less cheesy - that still works on a floor? With a power sample from Atila Engine Groups "Turkish showbiz", we created the track "Les Djinns", which you can listen to in our player (in a shorter radio version). But like all producers would say, I guess, this should be heard on the floor, on BIG speakers! It's been tested and approved.

Paul Oakenfold - Southern Sun (Gabriel & Dresden mix) [Perfecto]
Let’s face it… Oakenfold is a household name. Instead of letting you know how many millions of records he’s sold, and how many thousands of parties he’s spun lets get down to some rare unknown facts: Prior to becoming a world famous DJ and producer, Oakenfold served as an A&R consultant for Profile Records and Def Jam, where he signed artists including Salt N' Pepa, DJ Jazzy Jeff and Will Smith. Paul Oakenfold was born in London, England and currently resides in the U.S. Before becoming a major force in the music industry he graduated from the Westminster Technical culinary institute becoming a certified chef. He was also an investor along with rockers Tommy Lee and Dave Navarro in the Hollywood, CA nightlife establishment Rokbar. Oakenfold currently has a weekly residency in Las Vegas at the world famous Rain night club in the Palms.

Niyaz - Dilruba (Junkie XL remix) [Six Degrees]
By any measure, Niyaz has come very far, very fast. The trio’s 2005 debut featured a convincing blend of Sufi mysticism and trance electronica, and quickly established them as a standout ensemble in a very crowded world music field. A worldwide tour followed. Now, Niyaz returns with Nine Heavens, which doesn’t just cross cultural and stylistic boundaries, but the centuries as well. Drawing on medieval Persian poetry and 300-year old Persian folk songs, Niyaz has created a 21st century global trance tradition.

Holden & Thompson - Nothing (93 Returning mix) [Loaded]
James Holden is far from your average DJ-producer. Not that the manner of its creation should affect the listening experience: Holden’s intricate and inimitable production style ensures a coherence of atmosphere, where even DJ-friendly extended intros hold up to home-listening scrutiny. The Guardian went so far as to proclaim it “the most astonishing debut in electronic music since Boards of Canada’s Music Has the Right to Children.” And who are we to argue? The United Kingdom has established a reputation over the past decades to deliver stunning vocalists and singer/songwriters in all possible genres, and Julie Thompson is no exception to this unwritten rule. The ability to write and sing atmospheric lyrics and warm vocals seems to be the perfect antidote for the UK’s cold, gloomy and rainy climate, as proven over the years especially in high profile dance releases.

Tiesto & Josh Gabriel ft. Kirsty Hawkshaw - Walking On Clouds [Black Hole]
probably hands down my favorite record from the number 2 dj in the world. let's check out the video live!

Way Out West ft. Trisha Lee Kelshall - Mindcircus (Gabriel & Dresden remix) [Virgin]
Way Out West: the concord of Nick Warren and Jody Wisternoff, two DJs crackling with invention. Messrs Warren and Wisternoff lie poised for the unveiling of We Love Machine: their fourth full album in sixteen years of partnership. The Way Out West LPs come slowly, like comets, but when they hit it’s with the impact of alien technology:Nick’s marriage to his beloved Global Underground line keeps him pinned to a factory of innovators, and Jody’s nu disco sidestep with Starstrings this year showed he can dish out the hits like a cruiserweight. If last summer’s Spaceman EP got your neck hairs prickling as it took Glastonbury’s Dance East by storm, you can expect stars to fall come this September when we get to experience fresh WOW. It’s been a long time coming but you can bet your ast breath that the prize will be fast and shiny.

Ridgewalkers - Find (Andy Moor mix) [Baroque]
The Ridgewalkers were formed by two Dublin based DJ / producers Podje and Ive. Podje who is renowned for his 8 year residency at the U2 owned Kitchen nightclub and Ive, who is also a long time musician and sound engineer. After many years of djing and re-mixing under different guises the two meet up with singer / songwriter El. Having signed their dance mix of "Find" to Baroque records and an Andy Moor remix on the cards, the stage was set for their first major dance release Their first vinyl came out on Baroque in June 2004 and instantly picked up rave reviews and high buzz chart placements. Over the coming months the track was hammered by the world's top Dj's across the globe

Sarah McLachlan - Fallen (Gabriel & Dresden mix) [Netwerk]
Gabriel & Dresden met at the Winter Music Conference in 2001, when Josh Gabriel was giving out the white label of his first track "Wave 3" and Dave Dresden was scouting new music for Pete Tong. Both Gabriel and Dresden have been involved in music since they started their professional careers. Gabriel began writing and producing music after getting his first synthesizer in 1981. He eventually incorporated the computer into his music making with the addition of his trusty Mac Plus. Dresden's impressive career includes DJing for the past 15 years, while holding various high profile music industry jobs such as writer for artist interviews and music reviews, and driving A&R for Promo Only. Dresden has compiled mix CD's and compilations for several record labels, scouted for Pete Tong, has been a radio DJ and music director for both Internet and radio stations with a world wide listening base.

Jose Amnesia ft. Jennifer Rene - Louder [Armind]
In 1996 Rob Aker - aka Jose Amnesia - bought his first synthesizer, a cheap Atari, to begin composing electronic tracks. A couple years later, Age One records (UK) were interested in his work, and in 1998 the project Jose Amnesia was born. Rob also produces under the guise of Jamnesia together with Dino Lenny.

Andy Duguid ft. Leah - Wasted (original mix) [Songbird]

Andy Duguid's career took off in September 2006 when his production "Hypocrisy" was picked up by the mighty Tiësto. The support of the grand elite of DJ's followed soon after that when Hypocrisy gained heavy support during sets of Paul van Dyk and Armin van Burren, after being added to Tiësto's playlist for many consecutive weeks. Being signed to Black Hole after the bidding war that followed, Hypocrisy landed on the 5th spot of the Dutch Dance Charts and simultaneously landed the career of Andy Duguid, instantly establishing a name for him in the almost impregnable forest of producers in the scene as we know it today.

The Attic ft. Oh Laura - Release Me (Kevin Sunray remix) [Unlove]
Kevin Sunray, the Greek dj and producer was born in the biggest port of Greece, Piraeus. He is considered to be one of the most promising stars in the field of electronic music and furthermore one of the best Greek producers. He is not absorbed by a specific type of music instead he enjoys creating various music sounds avoiding relating himself to only one type. Through those unique creations are expressed joyful, sorrowful, intensive moments and a variety of feelings. As a dj he has the ability to drift the crowd and increase its adrenalin with his powerful house rhythms. Nowadays Kevin as a producer keeps on creating house music as well as music for his special project Moodway. A project, which indisputably excites and 'carries away'. He’s is an inspiration. He is a remarkable talent and a consummate professional. His music is born of real life and real passion. This is just the beginning for Kevin, he has just turned 25 years of age. He knows where he's going, and he'll certainly get there......

Perasma - Swing To Harmony (Gabriel & Dresden Remix) [Data]
A Greek downtempo/ambient group consisting of Sotiris Noukas, Diana Tsandekidou and Maria Preka. They officially started in 2001 but had been working together as a hobby since 1996. First official release, "Swing To Swing Fro'" single on Warner in 2001. Maria Preka left the group in 2003.
In 2004 John Con and Nikola Gala made a proggier take of the downtempo piece "Swing To Swing Fro'" and turned it into "Swing 2 Harmony" for the clubland which got soon after signed to several labels worldwide. Con and Gala don't relate to the group in any other way besides remaking the one song. In 2006 Perasma are recording new material and heading for a live tour.
