Nocturnal 201: The Reviews |

Way Out West - Killa [Distinctive]
“Killa." Out of the blue comes a slammin' house beat with some abstract and compelling vocal chants. This one really pounds; Way Out West is definitely into these great speed garage basslines. "Killa" seems like it would be tons of fun on any house dancefloor - it's a truly pounding the beat and peaks the album. Way Out West: the concord of Nick Warren and Jody Wisternoff, two DJs crackling with invention. Messrs Warren and Wisternoff lie poised for the unveiling of We Love Machine: their fourth full album in sixteen years of partnership. The Way Out West LPs come slowly, like comets, but when they hit it’s with the impact of alien technology:Nick’s marriage to his beloved Global Underground line keeps him pinned to a factory of innovators, and Jody’s nu disco sidestep with Starstrings this year showed he can dish out the hits like a cruiserweight. If last summer’s Spaceman EP got your neck hairs prickling as it took Glastonbury’s Dance East by storm, you can expect stars to fall come this September when we get to experience fresh WOW. It’s been a long time coming but you can bet your ast breath that the prize will be fast and shiny.

Hybrid - Dogstar [Distinctive]
Hybrid is Mike Truman and Chris Healings from Swansea, South Wales. They are the accomplished architects of house and progressive breakbeat who ventured further beyond the ecstatic knee-jerk response of the dancefloor by fusing their beats with powerful orchestral and cinematic soundscapes.
After DJing separately at Welsh clubs throught the late 80's and early 90's, Hybrid formed back in 1993 after bonding over Truman's remix of Pink Floyd's 'Another Brick In The Wall’. Their 1999 debut LP (with former member Lee Mullin) 'Wide Angle' sold a total of 100,000 copies world wide. "We like making music that will last," explains Healings. "Music that isn't disposable. We want people to listen to it over and over again in the future." "Music you can play before you go out and listen to when you chillout," continues Truman.

Atomic Hooligan - Shine A Light (Introspective remix) [Botchit]
Atomic Hooligan have grown from strength to strength. The LIVE show has rocked heads from Glastonbury to The Secret Garden festival amongst other major festivals and clubs all over the UK, Europe and Japan. Always informed by Breaks but never locked down by it. When you listen to their body of work or any of their DJ sets you will find that you can never quite place your finger on any one defining style, but know that you are enjoying yourself just listening. This will all be further confirmed in 31st March 2008 when their follow up album hits the shelves. This big melting pot of talent really does make for one tasty musical stew by anyone's standard...Unless your planning on sleeping under a rock this year you'll be hearing a whole lot more from these pioneering musical gents! The future is bright, the future is Atomic!

Quivver vs. Audio Magnetics - Digital Music (Seth Vogt remix) [Boz Boz]
For the past 15 years, John Graham has been at the forefront of the dance music scene. Perhaps you’ll know him better through his numerous alter ego’s including Quivver, Space Manoeuvres, Stoneproof, Skanna, and Tilt, as each of these projects produced numerous hit singles and had a heavy hand in shaping global dance music. While it’s true that Graham – in his many forms – has long been associated with the progressive house genre, Dirty Nails And Vapour Trails travels down many different paths. “I've always listened to and have been influenced by a lot of different stuff and I think it's sad that the scene is so divided these days. It's like there's a new genre every other week and people jump on that bandwagon until the next one comes along and forget where they came from. I also wanted the album to be something people could really listen to and that would still be relevant in a few years so I didn't want to do a bunch of 4 to the floor bangin' club tracks - that's what mix comps are for.”

Luetzenkirchen - The Killer [Great Stuff]
Since he started spinning the decks one and a half years ago he played all over the world. His remixes, same as his own productions remain top level quality. even with his unbelievable output and even getting more attention in the electronic scene. He is one of the very few guys in the scene that is able to produce and deliver top-notch tracks in virtually every aspect of style in today’s electronic music.

Coburn - Give Me Love (Andrea Doria remix) [Great Stuff]
As some of the hardest working producers in dance, the duo have barely spent a weekend in the UK this year. 2005 saw the genre-busting "We interrupt this programme" hit the world's radios and dancefloors and cement Coburn’s position as one of the most cutting edge production teams in the UK. Their hit single: We interrupt re-wrote the rule book on house music and won Coburn support from Djs as diverse as Zane Lowe, Jo Whiley, The Audio Bully's, Mylo, Carl Cox. Not wanting to write "We Interrupt - Part 2", the band mined a different seam altogether with "Give Me Love" - a dirty Moroder-inspired low-slung juggernaut.

Gus Gus ft. Daniel Agust - Moss (Tim Deluxe remix) [Pineapple]
Together Daníel Ágúst, Veiran and President Bongo are GusGus, Iceland's leading techno-/soul band.
GusGus saw the light of day for the first time in 1995, during a break in the making of the shortcut "Pleasure". Initially GusGus was as a multimedia collective that combined sexually tinged dance music with visual arts and shorts made by the group's members. Their fourth studio effort, "Attention", featured a new line-up and a new female vocalist, Urður "Earth" Hákonardóttir. Being a foursome GusGus became enormously focused on the thing that made the group known in the first place, the music. They released their fifth album, Forever, in February/March 2007. Forever brought more streamlined grooves into the sound world of GusGus and anthems like "Need in Me" and "Moss" which is the band's interpretation of Daníel's song from "Swallowed a Star" (One Little Indian, 2006).

Royksopp - What Else Is There (Trentemoller remix) [Wall Of Sound]
Their name Röyksopp, derived from Norwegian "røyksopp", translates into English as "puffball". This type of mushroom is notable for the misty cloud created when it releases its spores. There is also an obvious hallucinogenic double meaning to the name. Also, "Eple" from the first album translates to English as Apple.

Trentemoeller - Moan (Trentemoeller vocal mix) [Poker Flat]
Danish Electronic DJ & Producer currently living in Copenhagen, Denmark.
His debut album 'The Last Resort' (Poker Flat Recordings, 2006) was selected as "Album of the Year" in the German magazine Groove Mag and the French magazine Trax.

Bjork - Pagan Poetry (Infusion remix)
The three members are based in Melbourne, Australia, but they tour frequently. They have played live in the UK at Fabric, in the US at Spundae and Centrofly, and in Japan in Tokyo, Osaka and Sapporo.
They have attracted interest from DJs such as Bushwacka!, Audio Therapy label, and Marine Parade label. Most of their releases have come out on the Australian label Thunk, including their first album, Phrases And Numbers.

Coldplay vs. Grigory & Anthony - Square One
alented duet of Grigory Fatyanov and Anton Lemtyugin was formed in 2004 in Krasnoznamensk near Moscow. Sound is daring and complicated. It is a reflection of inner world and definitely of experience tightly connected with active participation in club life of the city. Before their team-project emerged, both of them were engaged in musical activity. Grigory & Anthony already released many their own singles and remixes on famous musicians tracks. In 2007 their work “Other Melody” was included to top 10 tracks by Juno Records and their bootleg-remix on Coldplay “Square One” received great reviews from Pete Tong, Sasha, Flash Brothers, Jose Amnesia, Dave Dresden, Simon & Shaker, Leama and was presented in Markus Schulz radio show “Global DJ Broadcast”. Their music is played on dance floors and radio stations in Russia and abroad. Grigory & Anthony don’t stop on what has been achieved, they are moving forward with fresh ideas and improving their technique inspired by the results and the support of musical community.

Foo Fighters - Everlong (PQM remix)
While he’s known for his progressive tribal house sounds, his roots are in hip-hop. He earned the name “Quick Mix” as a teenager when first wowing audiences with his “turntablist” skills. Not straying far from his background as a block party DJ growing up in Queens NY, he readily demonstrates those turntable skills with seamless mixing, creative layering and the clever use of acappellas, which often happen “live” and in the moment. His hip-hop sets to be filled with Old Skool “East Coast” anthems, and his house sets are unique, emotional and undeniable on the dance floor.

Ian Brown - F.E.A.R (U.N.K.L.E. remix) [Polydor]
U.N.K.L.E.’s remix of F.E.A.R, which is an up tempo/rehash of the original, but sorry James Levelle, its not a patch on the original! However, unlike many of Ian Browns previous albums, the remix CD actually flows along really nicely, and you may find yourself playing it more than the original, as it seems to offer greater depth and musical scope. But essentially it’s really only for the hard nose Ian Brown fan.

Syntax ft. Jan Burton - Bliss (Felix Da Housecat mix) [Illustious]
Felix Da Housecat, proper name Felix Stallings, is from Chicago, Illinois, USA. He is an electronic artist, producer, and DJ. The childhood friend of house legend DJ Pierre, Stallings' youth was spent experimenting with electronic musical equipment. He taught himself keyboards by the age of 14, and a year later stepped into a studio for the first time. An early tape had been passed on to the elder Pierre by a mutual playground acquaintance. Intrigued, he decided to record it properly, and from those sessions "Phantasy Girl" emerged. Based on the original keyboard motif from the demo tape, it became one of house music's biggest early cult smashes.

Sarah McLachlan - World On Fire (Junkie XL remix) [Arista]
Ever wonder what the XL in Junkie XL stands for? The XL stands for Xpanding Limits and that’s exactly what this dutch DJ has been doing. JXL is known as a talented remixer, drawing critical acclaim with remixes of tracks by Britney Spears, Bloc Party,Michael Bublé, Coldplay, Avril Lavigne. Sarah McLachlan, Rammstein, Scissor Sisters, Justin Timberlake, and the aforementioned Fear Factory. With an unrivaled work ethic, which routinely includes fourteen-hour days in his studio, Holkenborg keeps extremely busy creating the music for video games and films.

Wally Lopez ft. Aura - Dark Sweet Piano (Wally Lopez & David Ferrero remix) [Factomania]
Wally Lopez with a collaboration remix with David Ferraro perfectly titled "Dark Sweet Piano". The intro of this track is deep, dark, and driving until the piano chords and Aura's vocals melt together. This nocturne is a soon to be piano classic that will be join the realms of Robert Miles in the near future.

Gianluca Motta ft. Molly - Not Alone (deadmau5 remix) [WeLoveMusic]
Molly Bancroft. Is there anything that she sings on that isn’t incredible? (If you don’t remember her, she blessed us Gabriel & Dresdan’s Tracking Treasure Down) Gianluca Motta provides a solid progressive backdrop to showcase her beautiful voice. The Gabriel & Dresdan remix also is a praiseworthy adversary. Born and raised in Ontario, Canada, Joel Zimmerman is a Progressive House/Minimal Trance and Techno Producer and DJ. The name Deadmau5 (pronounced dead mouse) comes from an incident where a mouse crawled into Joel Zimmerman's computer. Dead mouse was too long for a site login name so he abbreviated it to be "Deadmau5"

Faithless ft. Cat Power - A Kind Of Peace (Gabriel & Dresden remix) [Nate's Tunes]
Fathless comprised of Maxi Jazz, Sister bliss, and Rollo. They usually use Pauline Taylor on the vocals, but Cat Power, indie folk vocalist, graces us with her unique style on this record. The contrast between the soothing musical programming, jiving rhythm pattern provided by Gabriel & Dresdan, and Cat’s smokey, melancholic vocals is what makes it so special, “A Kind of Peace”.

Gabriel & Dresden - New Path (album mix) [Organized Nature]
Gabriel & Dresden met at the Winter Music Conference in 2001, when Josh Gabriel was giving out the white label of his first track "Wave 3" and Dave Dresden was scouting new music for Pete Tong. Both Gabriel and Dresden have been involved in music since they started their professional careers. Gabriel began writing and producing music after getting his first synthesizer in 1981. He eventually incorporated the computer into his music making with the addition of his trusty Mac Plus. Dresden's impressive career includes DJing for the past 15 years, while holding various high profile music industry jobs such as writer for artist interviews and music reviews, and driving A&R for Promo Only. Dresden has compiled mix CD's and compilations for several record labels, scouted for Pete Tong, has been a radio DJ and music director for both Internet and radio stations with a world wide listening base.
