| DJ Dan Exclusive Nocturnal Interview |
Q1. Hi there Daniel and welcome to Nocturnal! How're you?
Im great, Thanks for having me on Nocturnal.
Q2. You've been tagged America's Hardest Working and Most Beloved DJ. How
does it feel to be known like that?
It's crazy honestly to think how long I've been dj'ing. I really never thought I could make a living out of something I loved growing up. I just feel very blessed and happy that people continue to let me tell my story through dj'ing. I've always looked at it as telling a story and that's why I try to incorporate many different styles into my dj sets. One night a friend walked up to me after my set and said"I can tell you are pissed off by the way you played-----I love it when you dj angry!". Evidently I play really hard and aggressive when I'm mad.
Q3. Since your start in '89, you've been at the forefront of dance music culture. From Funky Tekno Tribe to the present day, its been quite a journey....how do you think the music scene has evolved since then?
What is truly amazing to me is to see how dance music has evolved but at the same time will sample from old disco and funk bands. Daft Punk has been a great example of this. The music of the past really helps write the music of the future. At the end of the day we are always looking for great music to dance to but we want the music to keep the flavor of what we are familiar with, but with a fresh new twist and better production qualities.
Q4. You've played at diverse arrays of music festivals...which one would you rate the best?
At the moment, I would have to say that EDC in Los Angeles. It is one
of the biggest festivals in the world and because of the diversity of Los Angeles, the crowd gets off on many different styles of music.
It's also a crowd that really come out to dance and just have a great time. To dj to a crowd that big and hyped up makes me realize how happy I am to be a dj.
Q5. Whats your favourite movie, song, drink, vacation spot?
My favorite movie currently is Bruno. My Favorite song is Angel by The Eurythmics. My favorite drink is Vodka 7---Or just a shot of Patron. My favorite vacation spot is Florianaopolis, Brazil.
Q6. How was it working on your album "Future Retro"? Does it get tougher with time to be innovative with each new album?
You know, this is my first original artist album. Ive done many singles in the past and many mixed compilations but never an original full length album. I decided to pull from influences from my past on this record. That's why I have done half of the record as covers of my all time favorite dance tunes and the other half new material.
Q7. If you could choose only 3 things to take with you on a deserted island, what would they be?
My photo collection, my "dance hits of the eighties" collection, and a bottle of Kettle One.
Q8. Any plans of touring for the remainder of 2009? Where all can we expect to see you play?
Yes, I heading to Hawaii now and will be doing dates in Brazil, Hawaii, China and Canada as well as my usual dates her in the states.
Q9. Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish! Would you agree with this statement?
Yes, I do agree with this. The way I interpret this statement is that we shouldn’t be satisfied with what we have, we must strive to be greater and we need to keep the hunger to get there. We also can't be afraid of making mistakes because we will eventually get it right in the end!

Nic Chagall ft. Jonathan Mendelsohn - This Moment (prog mix) [High Contrast]
Nic Chagall – the mastermind behind the high-flying DJ team Cosmic Gate, a highly prolific producer with hundreds quality tracks to his name. Currently not only touring the hottest clubs around the globe every weekend, but out there established as one of the most creative and eclectic producers in the edm scene . Unlike some of the trance projects who sadly went their own ways, all this has been done without severing the ties with Bossi, the legend that is Cosmic Gate is still very much part of the equation, still together as a partnership and going from strength to strength as they continue to tour the major venues and festivals of the world. How much influence this wide ranging source of listening material will have on his next single remains to be seen. But one thing is sure: You won’t have wait long, until the next Nic Chagall smasher is going to hit the floor!

U2 - I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight (Dirty South remix) [Mercury]
The filthy curb-crawling new wave disco of Dirty South is a result of debauched years behind the decks and a lot of time spent at home creating his own musical fun. His Sleazy debut is the perfect introduction to the Dirty South school of naughty thought – a passionate electronik glam revenge on sadistic ghosts of past affairs. Dirty South caught the technically transmitted disease of DJing long before he even owned his first set of turntables. With the DJ bug in his blood, a young lad could be found teaching himself mixing skills on his NEC tape deck, utilising nothing more than its twin cassette players, a pause button and nimble fingers to recreate the sounds of club DJing in the safety of his own bedroom. At the start of 2008, Dirty South was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical category for his reworking of Kaskade's Sorry. He was beaten out on the night (by Benny Benassi) but he remains one of very few Australians to have ever been nominated for a Grammy.

Orion, Mango, J.Shore - Raining In Osaka (original mix) [Mango Alley]
Mango's musical and cultural interest in the Orient manifests itself once again in the contemplative "Raining in Osaka," a collaboration with talented newcomers Orion and J.Shore. In the Original mix, the upbeat rhythmic progression is countered by gentle, though, deeply poignant piano arp lines -- this is familiar emotional territory on a rainy day in spring, when one's mood can quickly turn introspective. German production duo Bale & Voltaire add a bit more weight to the percussion, as well as infuse the lead melody with more euphoric vibes. On the contrary, Mike Kiraly provides another tech-prog showcase on the Dub tip, with truly inspired sound design throughout. Finally, Shingo Nakamura provides the ideal closer -- a grooving, loungy progressive rendering, with a breath-taking piano solo in the break.

Colorless - Moonlight (original mix) [Emotive Sounds]
Colorless is one of the many projects of house producer/dj Alex Bass. Alex's first electronic experience was at the age of 14 when a friend of his gave him his first vinyl "keep control" by Sono, from the moment Alex heard it he became addicted to the deep and dark vibe of the song. From then on, Alex had been collecting music of that genre. In 2004, Alex turned 19 and had just joined the army. He realized that listening to, and collecting his favorite music alone just wasn’t enough, He started palying around with the idea of creating music, slowly but surely he had been drawn into music production. At the point where making his own music became more than just a hobby, Alex decided to put his talent to the test and send one of his original mixes to a certain label, and indeed it was later signed.

Noah Neiman ft. Catherine - Magic Feeling (Ilya Malyuev softtech remix) [Morphosis]
lya Malyuev is a Russian electronic music composer, producer and dj. Since the age of four, Ilya has been carried away by music. First learning classical music and composition from famous musicians, Ilya has since started working on electronic music in 2001. Ilya started searching for his own style in many different genres of electronic music and found himself in genres like progressive, deep trance, ambient and nu-jazz. The EP is mixed and has one storyline weaved through all the tracks. "Kiviniemi - is the Finnish name of a place where I spent a lot of happy and sad moments in my life; where I fell in love first time; and where I also lost the love. I keep these moments in my memory and I want to share them with you." Now, Ilya has continued to experiment and one of result of this experiment is Ilya's new "Softtech" style, which blends atmospheric melodies with cutting-edge techy grooves.

Angel & Jozhy K - Remember Me (Dmit Kitz remix) [Vibra Macz]
The sound of Dmit Kitz can be determined as a mix of tech-house and progressive, while the author himself tries not to become bounded with styles and create music for his own pleasure. His first releases were signed by two labels - Ukrainian Vibra Macz and Danish Limestreet Recordings. He devotes more time to working in studio; as a result geography of releasing is rapidly growing. In spite of young age, Dmitriy managed to elaborate his own style, which helps him to stand out among a mass of musicians, who try to imitate foreign colleagues. It’s impossible to identify the style of Dmit Kitz’s works. Hot mix of tech house and progressive, unusual melody and depth – the main components, which create his signature sound. “I can’t say that I’ve formed my style…I love each one and in future it will be as well. I don’t want to do the same. I will always have different sound.” – says Dmitriy about his music. That means that new experiments from Dmit Kitz are yet to come. At this time the producer together with his colleagues Alex Topspin and Andy Fink is hard at work on developing native sound, dreaming of cooperation with Toolroom Records and believes that intelligent music will devour the world after all.
