Exclusive JES Interview

KATIE TIAE - Hey Jes thank-you for taking some time out of your busy schedule to have a quick chat with us! How have you been? What have you been up to this week?

JES - I am good thank you so much. I just got back from filming a video with BT in the Palm Springs desert. It was quite a fun filled weekend. We set out with an amazing crew of people and ended up making a gorgeous video. The light there is magical and I cant wait to see it finished! Now I am back at the studio finishing some mixes and getting ready to shoot my next video for my new single Lovesong this weekend.

KATIE TIAE - Coming to the end of a decade a lot has changed in music and the world, what have been a few highs and lows you've remembered along the way?

JES -  I think for most people Its been a complicated and demanding decade and the conflicts have touched so many lives. I feel very blessed to be able to have had a successful career during this time, I was able to release my solo albums Disconnect and Into the Dawn. Achieving two number one billboard singles ATRC and Imagination and performing in iconic musical events likeTop of the Pops, The Elements of Life World Tour with Tiesto, The Olympics with Coca Cola, as well as traveling the world and experiencing countries and cultures I'd never thought Id visit but always hoped to.

KATIE TIAE - Your also doing a special live guest mix on this weeks show! What styles will we be hearing from you this time?

JES -  When Matt asked me to do a mix  we spoke about including all the hits. I wanted to include some of the lesser known mixes as well as a couple of exclusive tracks. There is my new single Lovesong coming out as well as the
Armin van

Buuren remix of my new song with BT" Every Other Way". Its a mixshow featuring my favorite alternative mixes. I covered the spectrum from Trance to pop to breaks.

KATIE TIAE -  Looking back this year in May you got to perform at the Playboy Mansion, what was that like as an experience?

JES -   In a word ..... the playboy mansion was wild. Where else will you find naked girls (and I mean totally), the Heff and the Hoff, great sushi, a crazy floor show and JES under one roof. The show was Wounded Warriors charity benefit, this is a great organization that aims to raise awareness and enlist the public’s aid for the needs of severely injured service men and women. find out how you can help at http://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/

KATIE TIAE - As a female performer / producer what advice do you give to other female performers striving in such a competitive industry?

JES - Set your goals and focus, the dance music business is highly competitive and especially difficult for the girls. Be prepared to put in more effort than everyone else, learn about all the aspects of your career be it creative, business or legal. Remember that you are the driving force, but don't forget to be grateful for the opportunities when they arise.

KATIE TIAE - Everyone reacts differently about how music makes them feel inside, what is your overall definition of music & how it makes you feel?

JES - I really feel that music is a universal language of emotion that we all understand.  It can provoke different emotions in people, but it makes us all feel something, and thats what keeps me so excited to be working in music day to day. It triggers memories and brings back specific times of your life, being a singer its very special to me being able to connect with large groups of people and sing together. Its incredible that something you can't even see can make you feel so much
.
KATIE TIAE - Your performing at GateCrasher the day after Christmas & New years, that sounds exciting. When will you get time to catch up with your family for the christmas break

JES - I am so looking forward to the holidays. Its that little break in time where I get be domestic Jes for a couple of days and spend some time at home in New York. Christmas in NYC is so festive, Its one of my personal Christmas traditions to get back there and spend some time with my family. I am really looking forward to performing at Gatecrasher again, the audiences in the UK are always great, I've done several Gatecrasher events in the past and I'm so excited to be launching material from my new album High Glow.

KATIE TIAE - Your working on a new album which we only know as 'HighGLow' (Coming out around March 2010 for all our listeners) what sort of styles can we except ?
JES - High Glow is just a natural progression for me. It definitely has its roots in electronic music but it’s all about the songs. Most of the club tracks will be remixes. They always seem to work so much better that way. I tried to capture some of the lighter side of myself. I had a lot of fun making it and there's still some classic Jes songs on the record. With that said, you can expect a wider array of influences and sounds. I put together a band and recorded a lot of the songs with them. We also included some orchestral sessions and even some urban material. Many of my friends helped by playing on it, so it’s really been a family affair. Out all the new sounds and ideas though, it still remains Rocktronica at the core.

KATIE TIAE - How have the tracks come together for this album, are they from any personal experiences

JES - I think that somehow you can't escape it coming form somewhere inside you. I love to look around and try to draw on other situations and experiences, but the expression of it always end up coming from me a little bit. I can't help it :-) There are definitely some more personal songs and those will stick out I think. I also really tried this time to have a little fun with myself and not be so serious! I always want to write songs that mean something but I also wanted to try and have a little fun with losing that. High Glow is a collection of songs that I started after coming off the Elements of Life tour with Tiesto. I'm just finishing the final tracks now. We've produced over 30 tracks for it, its a never ending process .... there's always one more song that needs to go on it. You have to know when to stop.

KATIE TIAE - Your first single from the album is coming out this month, can you tell us a bit about it?
JES - I went for a cover as the lead in single with,The Cure's Lovesong. It is one of my favorite 80's tracks. I started it while I was on the Elements of Life tour and ended up recording the vocals in hotel rooms and apartments across Europe with my laptop travel studio. We held onto it for a while, but when we started the album, everyone realized how much they loved how the song. Strangely, the engineer who mixed the original version for the cure in '89, Mark Saunders, contacted me just as we started mixing the album. When I looked him up I was amazed to see that he'd done the original, so he mixed my version too! It was the coolest coincidence :-)

KATIE TIAE - Other than a very anticipated third album launch early next year, what other plans are in the works for 2010?

JES - Starting my next album :) I am going to do shows with BT as well!!  With my new album Highglow, I will be touring with my band album and looking to do some new exceptional collaborations :)

KATIE TIAE - It has been a real honor to have you on board the Nocturnal Hot seat, Can you leave us with the best Quote you've ever heard.
JES -  "You can't always get what you want....but if you try sometimes you just might find, you get what you need" - Rolling Stones

Thanks again jes. Keep up the awesome talent looking forward to your new album :) Have a merry Christmas & a rockin' new years!  From Katie Tiae & the Nocturnal Family

Karol XVII & MB Valence - Shameless (Mark Lowry mix) [Seamless Recordings]
In this age of specialized formats and strict genre guidelines among DJ's and producers, what sets Mark apart from his peers is his ability to spin everything from deep house, techno, disco and classics in a set, with a determination of it all making sense, one of Shindig's longest standing residents, Mark Lowry is receiving considerable plaudits for his production talents and DJ skills overlooking the dance floor. Mark laid the foundations of his music career by becoming resident of one of the UK's Longest and most respected club nights Shindig, almost 8 years ago and while I sit and struggle to think of a world class DJ he hasn't played along side, Mark will be putting into action another project to put the majority of today's short sighted “myspace producers” to shame.

Jono Fernandez ft. Kathleen Mitchell - Everytime (Stefan Anion mix) [Proton Music]
Stefan Anion was introduced to dance music at a very young age. His father was the DJ at a local discotheque, and his mother often listened to early electronic music by Kraftwerk, Brian Eno, Jean Michel Jarre, and others. From infancy through his teenage years, the sounds of motown, soul, 80’s electro, synth-pop, and even classical radiated through the house. Stefan lived off of MTV in the early 80’s (when music was still the only programming) and was exposed to a variety of new, exciting sounds like ska, punk, and synth-pop. In 1989, a brief trip to England introduced him to the sounds of acid house. Even at the age of thirteen, Stefan managed to spend night after night in local English clubs and underground parties where he became hooked on the new electronic dance sound.
